This easy crochet baby shoes pattern is perfect for beginners and creates adorable handmade shoes with a teddy bear applique.
I recently made this pair for my nephew and I’m excited to share this free crochet baby shoes pattern with you.
These cozy little shoes are relatively easy to make and adjust for different age and size groups.
Materials You’ll Need
- Baby cotton yarn in 3 colors of your choice
- 3.0 mm crochet hook
- Scissors
- Yarn needle for weaving in ends
- Sewing needle and thread
- Stitch markers
- Teddy bear applique (Free written pattern)
Sizing Information
The finished sole measures approximately 13.5 cm long by 6.5 cm wide.
Based on these measurements, this pattern is best suited for babies around 18-24 months old.
If your little one has chubby feet like my nephew, these should fit perfectly! For smaller sizes, you can adjust by using fewer chains in the foundation.
do not be afraid of adjusting, here’s a quick formula.
We do the same at the beginning and at the end.
This also applies to the 6 stitches at the middle curve.
You will find so many size charts online, remember the best one is your actual baby’s.
Pattern Instructions
Making the Soles (Make 4 total – 2 for each shoe)

Foundation: Chain 16 (adjust for desired sole length)
Row 1:
- Skip the first chain
- Work 2 hdc in the next stitch
- Work 13 hdc across
- Work 6 hdc in the last stitch
- Without turning, continue working along the back loops of the foundation chain
- Work 13 hdc along the back
- Work 1 increase in the last stitch
- Slip stitch into the first stitch, chain 1
The First Round :
- Increase in the first 2 stitches
- Work 13 hdc
- Increase in the next 6 stitches
- Work 13 hdc
- Increase in the last 2 stitches
- Slip stitch, chain 1
Round 2:
- (Increase, hdc) repeat 2 times
- Work 13 hdc
- (Increase, hdc) repeat 6 times
- Work 13 hdc
- (Increase, hdc) repeat 2 times
- Slip stitch, chain 1
Round 3:
- Work a full round of hdc
- Slip stitch, chain 1
- Weave in ends
Pro Tip : skip this step for smaller size.
Once you’ve completed two sole pieces, sew them together with wrong sides facing to create a thick, sturdy base. Repeat for the second shoe.
Creating the Sides and Back

Now for the fun part! Fold each double sole in half and place 2 stitch markers to mark off the toe area.
You should have about 28 stitches around the toe section between the markers.
Attaching the yarn:
- Join your new color (or continue with the same) at one marker
- Work single crochet from one marker to the other around the heel and sides
- Chain 1
Building height:
- Work 4 rounds of hdc
- Finish with 1 final round of single crochet (or continue until you reach your desired height)
This creates the back and side portions of the shoe.
Making the Front Panel

Foundation: Chain 30 (use fewer chains for smaller sizes or less chubby feet.
my nephew has adorably chubby feet, so I used the full 30!).
But you need an even number.
Rows 1-2:
- Skip first chain in row 1, hdc across, ch1 and turn.
- Hdc across for row2.
Row 3:
- Decrease at the beginning (The first 2 stitches)
- Hdc across the middle stitches
- Decrease at the end (The last 2 stitches)
Row 4:
- Hdc across with no decreases
Rows 5-10:
- Repeat Rows 3 and 4 alternately (3 more times)
- And you should 10 rows total at this point
Rows 11-14:
- Work 4 more rows, decreasing at the beginning and end of each row (like Row 3)
Assembly
Time to put it all together!
Carefully sew the front panel to the shoe, attaching it to the sides and matching up the toe area.
Take your time with this step to ensure a neat finish.
Finally, attach your teddy bear applique to the front of each shoe.
You can find the applique pattern in our previous article and video tutorial.

- If you’re making these for a particularly small or large baby, remember you can adjust the foundation chain to customize the fit
