Learn how to crochet a stylish and functional bag with an oval base, perfect for everyday use. Materials Needed
- T-shirt yarn (approximately 300g)
- 8.0mm crochet hook
- Scissors
- Stitch markers
- 2 short Romanian cords (for handles) – you ill learn how to make them in the video tutorial below
- 1 long Romanian cord (for crossbody strap)
- 2 metal loops (for strap attachment)
Abbreviations
- ch = chain
- sc = single crochet
- inc = increase (2 sc in same stitch)
- sl st = slip stitch
- rnd = round
- st = stitch
- WC = waist coast stitch (working sc in the v not under the braid)
Gauge
Gauge is flexible for this project, but your finished oval base should measure approximately 6-7 inches long after Round 5.
Pattern Instructions
The Oval Base
Round 1 (Foundation):
- Chain 9
- Working in the back loops only, sc in 2nd chain from hook and in next 7 chains (7 sc total)
- 3 sc in the last back loop
- Continue working along the opposite side of the foundation chain without turning
- 7 sc along the other side
- 3 sc in the last stitch
Round 2:
- 7 sc
- inc x 3
- 7 sc
- inc x 3
Round 3:
- 7 sc
- (inc, sc) x 3
- 7 sc
- (inc, sc) x 3
Round 4:
- 7 sc
- (inc, 2 sc) x 3
- 7 sc

- Invisible join and fasten off

Bag Sides
Transition Round:
You have two options for creating a firm rise:
Option A (Firmer rise):
- Chain 1
- Working in the opposite direction from your last round, work sc all around the base
- Next round: Work WC all around for continuous rounds (11)
Option B (Standard rise):
- Chain 1
- Work sl st all around the base
- Next round: Work sc all around in the slst row we just made
- then work WC continuous rounds (10)
Handle Attachment
Marking Handle Placement:
- Fold the bag in half to find the center points
- Place stitch markers at both sides
Attaching Short Romanian Cord Handles:
- On one side of the bag, work 6 sc from the st marker
- Attach one end of a short Romanian cord
- Skip 8 stitches
- Attach the other end of the same Romanian cord (this creates one handle)
- Continue around to the opposite side
- Repeat the same process: 6 sc, attach Romanian cord, skip 8 stitches, attach other end
- Make sure both handles are equal in height and placement
Attaching Crossbody Strap (Optional):
- Attach metal loops to the sides of the bag
- Connect a long Romanian cord to the metal loops to create an adjustable crossbody strap
Finishing
- Weave in all ends
- Your crochet bag is ready to use!
Customization Ideas
