Crochet Beanie Size Guide
Use this table to make this crochet beanie pattern for any age. The “Brim Circumference” is calculated as (Head Circumference – 2 cm) for a snug fit.
| Age Group | Head Circumference | Brim length/ circumference | Total Hat Height |
|---|---|---|---|
| Newborn | 33 – 35 cm | 31 – 33 cm | 13 – 14 cm |
| 3 – 6 months | 36 – 41 cm | 34 – 39 cm | 15 cm |
| 6 – 12 months | 42 – 44 cm | 40 – 42 cm | 16 cm |
| 1 – 2 years | 46 – 48 cm | 44 – 46 cm | 17 cm |
| 2 – 4 years | 48 – 50 cm | 46 – 48 cm | 18 cm |
| Child/Teen | 51 – 53 cm | 49 – 51 cm | 19 – 20 cm |
| Adult Woman | 55 – 58 cm | 51 – 54 cm | 20 – 22 cm |
| Adult Man | 56 – 60 cm | 54 – 58 cm | 22 – 24 cm |
Note: Measure head circumference around the fullest part of the head, just above the ears. Subtract 2 cm for the unstretched brim length to ensure a snug fit.
Pattern Instructions
Step 1: Create the Brim

- Chain 8 (or desired brim length) according to the head circumference.
- Row 1: Skip 1 chain, SC in back loop only (BLO) across (7 SC)
- Row 2: Chain 1, turn. SC in BLO across (7 SC)
- Repeat Row 2 until brim measures 40 cm unstretched (44 cm when stretched), or your head circumference minus 2 cm unstretched
Adjustments:
- For a wider/taller brim, start with more chains (ch 10 for a 9 SC brim)
- For a narrower brim, start with fewer chains (ch 6 for a 5 SC brim)
- The brim should be able to stretch to your head circumference comfortably without being too loose.
Step 2: Join the Brim
Fold the brim strip so the two short ends meet. Using slip stitch or single crochet stitch, join the ends together to form a ring. Make sure the brim isn’t twisted!
Step 3: Work the Body of the Beanie

- With the brim seam at the back, work SC stitches evenly around the top edge of the brim
- Continue working in rounds (or joined rows with ch 1, turn if preferred)
- Create your stripe pattern:
- 5 sc rows blue
- 3 sc rows white
- Repeat this pattern alternating colors
- Continue until the beanie measures 16 cm For the 1-1.5 year size from the bottom of the brim (2 rows less than desired total height)
Step 4: Crown Decreases
Last 2 rows:
- Decrease Round 1: (2 single crochet together ) evenly around. Aim to reduce stitches by approximately half
- Decrease Round 2: dec around.
Finishing:
- Cut yarn, leaving a long tail (about 20 cm)
- Thread tail through remaining stitches
- Pull tight to close the crown
- Weave in all ends securely
Pattern Adjustments
Fit Adjustments
- Too tight? Add more rows to the brim before joining
- Too loose? Remove rows from the brim or decrease head circumference measurement by 3-4 cm instead of 2 cm
- Too short? Add more SC rows before starting decreases
- Too tall? Work fewer rows in the body section
Design Variations
- Solid color: Skip the stripes and work the entire beanie in one color
- Different stripe pattern: Try 2 rows of each color, or random stripe widths
- Slouchy beanie: Add 5-8 cm extra height before starting crown decreases
- Folded brim: Make the brim 16 chains tall instead of 8
Tips for Success with This Crochet Beanie Pattern
- Check your gauge regularly – Every 10 rows, measure the height to ensure you’re matching the pattern gauge
- Try it on as you go – The beauty of this brim-up method is you can check the fit!
- Keep tension consistent – Especially important in the brim section for even stretch
- Count your rows – Keep track of your stripe pattern to maintain consistency
- Block if needed – A gentle steam block can even out stitches and improve drape
This crochet beanie pattern is perfect for gift-giving or personal use.
The simple construction makes it an excellent project for beginners learning to crochet in the round, while the customizable sizing ensures a perfect fit every time.
Happy crocheting!
