- Yarn needle
- Scissors
Skill Level
Easy to Intermediate – Perfect for crocheters ready to practice color changes.
Pattern Instructions
Make the Cuff
- Chain 10 for the length of your cuff.
- Work an odd number of hdc rows in back loop only.
- You can do 17, 19, 21, or 23 rows depending on your wrist size.
- The key is keeping the total odd so that when you join with a slip stitch to create the tube, your total becomes even.
- Single crochet evenly around the top edge of each row, and make sure you have an even number of sc stitches. This is crucial for the shell pattern to work correctly.
- The cuff should barely wrap around your wrist without being too far away from closure.
Round 1: Start the Shell Pattern
- Using your first color, chain 3 which counts as your first dc. Work 2 more dc in the first stitch to complete your first shell of 3 dc total.
- Skip 1 stitch, then work 3 dc in the next stitch.
- Skip 1 stitch. Continue this pattern of working a 3 dc shell and skipping 1 stitch all the way around.
- When you reach the end of the round, slip stitch to the top of the beginning chain 3.
- Cut yarn and fasten off completely for a clean color change.
Round 2: Second color
Join your second color in any space between two shells from the previous round.
- Chain 3 and work 2 dc in the same space to complete your first shell.
- Work 3 dc shells in each space between the shells from Round 1.
- The shells should nestle perfectly in the spaces.
- Slip stitch to the top of beginning chain 3, cut yarn and fasten off.
Rounds 3-5: Build the Pattern
- Keep repeating the same process with new colors.
- Join yarn in a space between shells, work shells in all the spaces, slip stitch to join, and fasten off.
- You can alternate between two favorite colors, use a different color for each round, or create an ombre effect with shades of the same color.
- Complete through Round 5 up to the last 3 shells.
Create the Thumb Opening
- On Round 5, work your shells as usual until you have 3 shells remaining in the round.
- Instead of working those last 3 shells, skip them completely and slip stitch directly to the opposite shell.
- This creates your thumb opening.
Finish the Hand
- Continue working 2 more rounds in the shell pattern.
- The thumb opening will remain in place as you work around it.
- Keep changing colors as desired.
- After completing Round 7, cut yarn and fasten off.
Add the Thumb Edging
- Join yarn in the first stitch at the thumb opening.
- Chain 3 which counts as your first dc.
- Work 1 more dc in the same stitch for a total of 2 dc in the first stitch.
- Work 1 dc in each stitch across the entire thumb opening.
- In the last stitch, work 2 dc.
- Slip stitch to the top of chain 3.
- Cut yarn, fasten off, and weave in all ends with your yarn needle.
Customization Ideas
Length: Want longer gloves? Add more rounds before creating the thumb opening and after it
Width: If the gloves are too tight, go up a hook size. Too loose? Try a smaller hook
Texture: Use a fuzzy or sparkly yarn for one of your colors for extra interest
Embellishments: Add small buttons, beads, or a crochet flower to the cuff
Single Color: This pattern looks beautiful in just one color too, letting the shell texture shine
Fixing Common Mistakes
Shells don’t line up: Check that your foundation sc round has an even number of stitches
Thumb opening too small: Skip 4 or 5 shells instead of 3 on Round 5
Thumb opening too large: Only skip 2 shells on Round 5
Wavy edges: You may have too many stitches. Ensure you’re skipping 1 stitch between each shell
Glove twists: Make sure you’re consistently working in the same direction for each round
Color bleed at changes: Pull your first stitch of each new color snug to avoid gaps
Making a Matching Pair
- The same hands have the same pattern, you can switch them up no problem and no adjustments needed.
- Use the exact same color sequence for both gloves for a traditional matched set.
- Or create mirror image gloves by reversing your color order for a fun asymmetrical look.
- Some crocheters love making intentionally mismatched gloves with completely different color combinations.
These crochet fingerless gloves are perfect for chilly mornings when you need to text, type on your computer, drive, or handle tasks that require finger dexterity.
They’re great for students, office workers, crafters, and anyone who spends time in cold environments.
The colorful design means they’ll brighten up any winter outfit!
