Granny squares are everywhere right now, from cardigans and shawls to bags. This colorful 9-round version is a classic granny square worked in dark pink, green, beige, and brown, it can be adjusted for different types of projects, sizes and colors. So Grab your hook and let’s get started!
Materials Needed
- Yarn in 4 colors: dark pink, green, beige, brown (any weight – I used worsted yarn, just match your hook)
- Crochet hook – 4.00 mm
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
Abbreviations Used
- MR = Magic Ring
- ch = chain
- slst = slip stitch
- dc = double crochet
- sp = space
- FO = fasten off
Round 1 (dark pink)
MR, ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc in the ring. Ch 3, 3 dc in the ring. Rep 3 more times, ch 3, slst to top of ch-3 to join. Pull the ring tight. (4 corners, 4 spaces, 12 dc)
Round 2 (dark pink)
Ch 3, 2 dc in the same sp. Ch 1. (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in the next corner sp, ch 1. Rep for the next 2 corners. back to the first corner sp, work 3 dc, ch 3, slst to top of beginning ch-3 to join. (4 corners, 8 clusters, 24 dc)
Round 3 (dark pink)
Slst to the top of the ch3. Ch 3, 2 dc in the same sp. Ch 1, 3 dc in the ch-1 side sp, ch 1. (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in the corner sp, ch 1, 3 dc in the side sp, ch 1. Rep around. In the first corner sp, work 3 dc, ch 3, slst to join. (1 side cluster per side, 36 dc)
Round 4 (dark pink)
Same as round 3, but work 3 dc, ch 1 in each side sp. (2 side clusters per side, 48 dc)
Round 5 (green)
Join the green in any corner sp, ch 3, 2 dc in the same sp, and work as in round 3. (3 side clusters per side, 60 dc)
Round 6 (green)
Same as round 5. FO green. (4 side clusters per side, 72 dc)
Round 7 (beige)
Join the beige in any corner sp, ch 3, 2 dc, and continue the same way. (5 side clusters per side, 84 dc)
Round 8 (beige)
Same as round 7. FO beige. (6 side clusters per side, 96 dc)
Round 9 (brown, border)
Join the brown in any corner sp and work one more round the same way. FO. (7 side clusters per side, 108 dc)

Finishing
Weave in all ends securely. Block by pinning flat and misting with water, or steam block. Finished size: 24 cm each side of the square.
Common Mistakes
- Lopsided corners: you probably skipped the second half of the first corner at the end of the round.
- Wavy edges: check your side clusters against the table above.
- Wrong stitch count: remember the starting ch 3 counts as a dc.
